1789 – George Washington takes the oath of office as the first elected President of the United States on the balcony of Federal Hall in New York City.
1803 – The United States purchases the Louisiana Territory from France for $15 million, doubling the size of the nation.
1812 – The Territory of Orleans ratifies the US Constitution, becoming the 18th state — Louisiana.
1938 – The animated short Porky’s Hare Hunt, featured a character called Happy Rabbit, an early version of Bugs Bunny in his first appearance.
