CALAMITY JANE (1856-1903) — American frontierswoman and Wild West Show performer.
JOSEPH HELLER  (1923-1999) — American novelist, short story writer, playwright and screenwriter.  Best known for writing Catch-22.
TIM McGRAW (1967) — American country music artist, actor, and record producer.

1840 – The Penny Black, the world’s first official adhesive postage stamp is issued in the United Kingdom.
1886 – Rallies are held throughout the US demanding an eight-hour work day for workers.  They will culminate in the Haymarket Affair in Chicago three days later.
1931 – The Empire State Building is dedicated in New York City.
1956 – Jonas Salk’s polio vaccine is first made available to the public.
1989 – Disney-MGM Studios (today Disney’s Hollywood Studios) opens in Walt Disney World, Florida.
1999 SpongeBob Squarepants premieres on Nickelodeon.
