1626 – Dutch explorer, aboard the See Meeuw, lands in New Netherland (present day Manhattan Island).
1776 Rhode Island is the first colony to renounce allegiance to, and declare independence from, King George III of England.
1886 The Haymarket Affair — A bomb is thrown at police trying to break up a labor rally in Chicago and police fire into the crowd. At least 8 are killed as a result of the violence.
1904 – The United States begins construction of the Panama Canal.  It will be completed 10 years later.
1979 Margaret Thatcher becomes the first female Prime Minister of the United Kingdom
