ROBERT PEARY (1856-1920) — American naval officer and explorer.  Claimed to have been the first to reach the geographic North Pole.
RUDOLPH VALENTINO  (1895-1926) — Italian silent film actor and one of the world’s first pop icons.  His sudden death caused a worldwide hysteria among his fans.
ORSON WELLES (1915-1985) — American actor, director, and writer.  Best known for his 1938 radio broadcast of War of the Worlds and for the film Citizen Kane.
WILLIE MAYS (1931) — American Hall of Fame baseball player.  Considered one of the greatest players of all time.

1915 Babe Ruth, a pitcher for the Boston Red Sox, hits his first major league home run.
1937 – The Hindenberg disaster – the German zeppelin catches fire and is destroyed in Lakehurst, NJ, killing 36.
1954Roger Bannister becomes the first person to run a mile in under 4 minutes.

1775 – The Society for the Relief of Free Negroes Unlawfully Held in Bondage is organized in Philadelphia by Benjamin Franklin and Benjamin Rush.
This is the first abolitionist society in North America.
1828 – Noah Webster copyrights the first edition of his dictionary.
1865– President Abraham Lincoln is shot in Ford’s Theater in Washington DC by John Wilkes Booth.  He will die the next day.
1902 – James Cash Penney (J.C. Penney) opens his first store in Kemmerer, Wyoming — The Golden Rule Store.
1912 – The RMS Titanic hits an iceberg in the North Atlantic at 11:40pm and will sink at approximately 2:20am the next morning.
1939 The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck is first published by Viking Press.
1958 – The Soviet Satellite Sputnik 2 falls from orbit after 162 days.  It carried the first living thing into space, a female dog names Laika
